| A Zero Energy Home combines state-of-the-art, energy-efficient construction and appliances with renewable energy systems, such as solar water heating, solar radiant heating, and solar electricity. The combination results in a home that produces its own energy—as much or more than it needs. Even though the home might be connected to a utility grid, it has net zero energy consumption from the utility provider.
When the renewable resources aren’t able to provide all of the home’s power (for example at night or on a rainy day) the homeowner uses energy from their utility provider. When the renewable resources produce more energy than the house is using (for example on a sunny day when no one is home) the power is sent back to the utility grid.
Zero Energy Homes have a number of advantages:
- Improved comfort— reduces temperature fluctuations
- Reliability— continues to function during blackouts
- Energy security—protects homeowners from future energy price hikes
- Environmental sustainability— saves energy and reduces pollution
